Book Review: Start Your Own Business
If you want to start a business, but don't know where to start, then the
place to start is with "Start Your Own Business: The Only Start-Up Book
You'll Ever Need" by Rieva Lesonsky. The book is put out by
Entrepreneur Press and is essentially a compilation of Entrepreneur
Magazine's large knowledge database regarding starting a business.
The book literally takes you through the entire business process - from determining if you really have what it takes to run a business to how to deal with failure if your business doesn't work out, and everything in between. The best part about the book is that it covers nearly EVERYTHING in some capacity. If you need more information, it does a great job of suggesting further reading and pertinent web sites.
The book is broken down into seven sections, each with several chapters. The first section, 'You Gotta Start Somewhere' covers determining if you can be an entrepreneur, how to come up with an idea for your business, and whether you should launch your business part time or full time. Most people who buy the book will already have answers to these questions, but going through the exercises in the book can still be helpful.
The second section of the book is entitled 'Building Blocks'. It covers how to name your business, choosing a business structure, creating a business plan, and how to hire a lawyer and accountant. I think that this is the most valuable section of the book. These are the things that most entrepreneurs either struggle with or ignore. The "Naming Your Business" chapter in particular helped me a great deal. Naming your business is not nearly as easy as you think - you need to consider all registered trademark names, registered domain names, and names that are being used but not trademarked. One of the worst things that you can do is to pick a name that is already being used by someone and face a legal battle down the road.
The third section covers financing including where and how to get money to run your business. The fourth section, 'Setting the Stage' is absolutely massive and covers numerous important things such as choosing a location for your business, creating a professional image, offering customers credit, hiring your first employee, and business insurance. Needless to say, all of these things are extremely important to every business owner.
The fifth section covers buying company computers, cell phones, and cars. These things probably won't be very difficult for most business owners. The sixth section, however, covers one of the hardest thing every business owner faces - marketing. The section is nearly 100 pages about advertising, marketing, and public relations. It also briefly touches on web-marketing but those looking to seriously profit online will need to look elsewhere because the book is a little thin when it comes to e-commerce.
The final section, entitled 'By the Books' goes over every entrepreneurs favorite things - accounting and taxes. It gives solid advice regarding basic bookkeeping, financial statements, budgeting, and taxes. For most business owners this section and the web resources listed should be more than enough to get them started on keeping their business legal.
I can't overemphasize how important I think it is for every business owner to have this book. It is a mini-encyclopedia (ok, so 800 pages isn't THAT mini) for everything business related. Having this book on your shelf will save you countless hours. I read it from cover to cover when I got it and I constantly refer back to it. Cisco Certification: Putting Together Your Own Home Practice Lab
CCNA and CCNP candidates hear it all the time: "Get some hands-on
experience". From my personal experience climbing the Cisco
certification ladder, I can tell you firsthand that there is no learning
like hands-on learning. No simulator in the world is going to give
you the experience you will get cabling and configuring your own
routers.
Whenever I mention this to one of my students, they always say it costs too much. The truth is, it is cheaper now to build your own CCNA and CCNP lab than it has ever been. The secret? Used routers.
The word "used" turns off a lot of people not many of us buy used computers or used servers. Cisco routers, though, are robust. I personally own a Cisco 4000 router that I use as a Frame Relay switch in my lab that I've had for about four years, and I've never had a problem with it.
The good news for current CCNA and CCNP candidates interested in building their own labs is that used Cisco equipment has never been more plentiful or cheaper. eBay is a good way to get an idea of what's out there and what the prices are, but you don't have to assemble your lab one piece at a time. Many eBay vendors who sell used Cisco equipment sell ready-made CCNA and CCNP labs for one price, including cables.
I asked one major vendor of CCNA and CCNP labs, www.ciscokits.com, what the most common questions are regarding building your own home lab. Here's what they had to say:
Why do I need real routers instead of a simulator?
You need a physical router,as the simulators just don't have the ability to give you the "hands on" you need to see what happens when you disconnect a cable or put a cable in the wrong location. You will come to find quickly that mistakes you make on Router 1 are affecting Router 5 all because you did not screw in a cable properly. No simulator can simulate that.
How many routers do I need?
Two routers really are required to see if anything works. If you have a very limited budget, you can receive value from only purchasing a single router over working with a simulator. However, you will not be able to see the main thing we are trying to accomplish. The propagation of route tables!
The only way you can see if your configurations work, is to have at least two routers. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you purchase a dual router kit that comes with all the accessories you need. Otherwise you can spend days trying to find all the little extra pieces you need to get your lab up and running.
Do I need a switch?
Well, it is nice to have. However, with only about 2 questions on the test dedicated to "hands on" switch knowledge, if you have to skimp on something, skimp on the switch.
What routers and switches should I buy?
Choices, choices, choices! Which 2500/2600 router do I pick? I will list some pros and cons of each router below, along with current prices (note that prices are generally lower if you buy a dual router kit instead of a single router). Please note that prices are approximations.
1) Cisco 2501 Router with 16 MB Flash/16MB DRAM $94.99. The cheapest introduction router, and it can support a vast majority of the commands that you will need to learn for your CCNA test. All 2500 routers that we will discuss come with a minimum of two serial ports and an Ethernet port. <
You will need to add a transceiver to this unit to convert the Ethernet AUI port to an RJ-45 style Ethernet port.

5) Cisco 2520 Router with 16 MB Flash/16MB DRAM $119.99. This is the same as a 2503 but it also adds two more serial ports so you can use this as a frame relay switch later in your CCNA studies. It costs the same as a 2503, so this is a great money saving tip.
6) Cisco 2612 Router with 32 DRAM and 8 MB Flash $199.99. This is a modular router unlike any of the 2500 series routers. So the big benefit of this is you can buy extra modules to add functionality such as more serial ports, ISDN ports, Ethernet ports, WICs and such. However, due to the flexibility you will pay a bit more. One day it is a frame relay switch, the next it is your ISDN router. In the long run it will be cheaper than purchasing a bunch of dedicated routers for each
discipline you want to learn.

In the end, you spend only a few hundred dollars, and you gain invaluable experience and knowledge that will help you both in your certification quest and your job performance. I ask her what she will do with Lycantrop. "I don't know" she replies "I want to know who he is. Motorcycle Road Trips In North Florida: Jax Beach To Fernandina
With bike week just around the corner, bikers from all over the country
are pulling their motorcycles out of winter storage and cleaning up
their leathers in anticipation of a motorcycle rally like no other.
While Daytona is definitely the place to be the week of March 5th,
Florida offers some great stretches of road through pristine landscapes
to some great biker destinations.
About an hour and a half north of Daytona on A1A lies the bustling beach community of Jacksonville Beach, which is where we will meet for the start of our road trip- because, well, that's where I'm from! On any given day you'll find bikes and bikers parked and hanging out at the Jax Beach Pier parking lot. Just across the street is the famed biker bar Mango's, a great place for bikers to meet, have some good home cooking and shoot some pool. Summer weekends will generally find some heavy metal band performing outside on the covered deck. So put on your best leather motorcycle jacket and come on out to Mango's to start our first north Florida road trip.
Our first day trip will start from Jax Beach and head north on A1A to Fernandina Beach, a quaint little island town with its own unique attitude. If you follow A1A north, after bearing left at Mayport Naval Station, you will be cruising through the marshlands at the mouth of the St. Johns River and come to a dead end at the ferry in Mayport Village. A traditional fishing village, this is where most of north Florida gets their seafood. Shrimp boats, party boats, and deep sea charters line the docks, and you can even take a gambling cruise from here. If you're hungry, there's an old wooden shack sitting on the water that serves some of the best seafood available. Singletons is not much to look at, but it's been there forever and people drive for miles to sit on the water enjoying the freshest of Florida seafood, while watching the pelicans scrounge for theirs.
Taking the ferry across the river, you'll once again pick up A1A heading north. To your right you'll soon see a huge barren sandbar that was formed by the northern jetties at the mouth of the St. Johns. On the eastern edge are the jetties, the Atlantic Ocean, and a beach that is packed with babes of all shapes and sizes. The western side has a lagoon and the Fort George River inlet. A very wide beach at low tide, vehicles have been swallowed up and swept away by the Atlantic because of people parking just a little too close to the water, and taking a walk in the dunes. A great place for jet skiing, swimming, fishing and surfing, Huguenot Park also has a campground with primitive and RV camp sites and showers.
For the next several miles, you will be cruising through some of the most pristine and unspoiled wetlands in Florida. Island hopping through little and big Talbot Islands and the Timacuan Preserve, this coastal area is one of the few in Florida untouched by development, and will theoretically remain that way. Flora and Fauna abound, and nature lovers flock to the area in kayaks and flatboats to navigate the waterways in search of trout and redfish.
Heading across the Nassau Sound Bridge to Florida's northern most barrier island, the developments once again start to pop up. World renowned resort Amelia Island Plantation has vast acreages of condos, single family houses, an Inn rivaled by none, and a huge convention center that draws business from all over the world. A community within itself, the Plantation strives, and has done a good job, of preserving the natural habitat.
Not to be outdone, the Ritz Carlton is just a few miles north and is also a magnet for the well to do, with a golf course and all the pampering the Ritz is known for!
Almost there, we take A1A into downtown Fernandina Beach. An old fishing village like Mayport, Fernandina is much larger and has many unique and historical buildings. The waterfront is speckled with shrimp boats and deep sea charters, and Brent's is the restaurant on the docks. Fernandina Beach also hosts an annual shrimp festival on the first weekend in May.

The Palace Saloon has been there since 1878, and although it burned in 1999, it has been restored to its original 18th century wooden décor. More of a bar than a restaurant, this is where you get to know the locals, many of which are in the hospitality industry and definitely know how to party hardy! With live bands, dancing, flirting and drinking, the Palace Saloon is the place to party in Fernandina Beach!
In my next road trip article we'll head south on A1A to our nations oldest city. Founded by Ponce de Leon in 1513 and home of the fountain of youth, this place is just a tiny little drinking town with a fishing problem!

My name is Stephen Hill and I had a stammer for eighteen years. I went to various types of speech therapy which even though was of some use, never really offered me any hope of a "cure".
At the age of twenty two, after a lot of hard work I managed to overcome the stammer and I now help other people to achieve fluency.
These are the types of situation that I found that I was most likely to stammer:
Ordering food and drink at a bar
Phone calls
Introducing people
Meeting new people
Talking when under pressure
Talking when tired or stressed
On my first day at senior school, all of the first year pupils were shown to their form room, including myself. The teacher, who was to be our form teacher, introduced himself and welcomed us to the school.
He then said
"OK class, I have introduced myself. I don't know any of you in here and most of you won't know each other. So what I would like you first of all to do, is to stand up and tell me your name and which junior school you used to attend."
He asked somebody on the front row to start, but because I was hiding at the back of the room, I would end up being one of the last people to speak. This was not a good thing as it meant I had a lot of time to worry about it. When my time arrived to speak, I could not even get one word out, it was most humiliating.
This is one of many bad days I had during the time when stammering was ruining my life.

Saran saya, kalau terpaksa harus pakai iklan gratis, pasanglah iklan di tempat pemasangan yang mempunyai ribuan pengunjung per hari dan dalam bentuk jaringan. Maksudnya dengan 1x pasang, iklan kita akan langsung tayang di puluhan situs iklan.

Untuk pasang iklan disana, caranya:
- Anda daftar dulu (gratis)
- lalu LOGIN, isi username dan password
- klik menu Pasang Iklan.
- ketika sudah terkirim iklannya, jangan lupa klik lagi next, next,
(untuk submit ke situs iklan lainnya)
Kelemahan iklan gratis adalah, iklan kita tampil di situs iklan baris itu hanya sebentar. Sebab ‘kan yang orang yang pasang iklan itu sangat banyak, sehingga kurang dari 1 jam, iklan kita sudah tergeser ke bawah, masuk ke halaman lain.
Tapi, kalau masih mau “ngotot” pakai iklan baris, sebaiknya gunakan deh software iklan baris, yang akan memasang iklan kita ke lebih dari 1100 situs iklan baris. Harganya sekitar 30 ribu rupiah. Saya suka pakai software autosubmit ini.
2. IKLAN PREMIUM, BAYAR PER BULAN
Kalau kita promosi di iklan gratis, setahu saya hasilnya kurang memuaskan. Jadi saya pribadi kurang suka menggunakan cara ini, sebab terus terang, selain capek, hasilnya juga bisa dibilang kurang bagus. Saya kira situs-situs iklan baris yang ada saat ini, harus mencari terobosan untuk mengatasi kekurangan ini.
Yang agak lumayan bagus menurut saya adalah pasang iklannya dengan sistemnya bayar per bulan. Nggak terlalu mahal. Ada yang 30 ribu, ada yang 45 ribu ada juga yang 100 ribu, tergantung situsnya.
Pada iklan berbayar ini, iklan kita akan muncul terus selama 30 hari, tiap hari di halaman depan, sehingga hampir dipastikan akan ada yang KLIK ke web kita.
Tapi jangan lupa, sebelum memasang iklan premium ini, perlu perhatikan hal-hal berikut:
- Cek terlebih dahulu statistik web iklan tsb, cari yang jumlah pengunjungnya di atas 3000 per hari. Bisa dilihat di statistik yang ditampilkan web tsb di bagian pinggir. Kalau gak ada statistik web, jangan pasang disana, bisa jadi pengunjungnya masih sedikit.
- Cek juga apakah link ke web kita, langsung ataukah harus buka halaman info detil dulu. Menurut saya, carilah yang bisa langsung masuk ke web kita (kecuali kita tidak menjual lewat link website). Biasanya ada tulisan “kunjungi website” dan link nya bisa langsung ke web kita. Itu jauh lebih menguntungkan.
- Pastikan iklan kita sudah tampil setelah kita melakukan pembayaran. Kalau belum, segera hubungi admin/pengelolanya.

Disitu, iklan kita dipasang di puluhan situs iklan yang masuk dalam jaringannya. Bayarnya sekitar 80.000 per bulan.
Biasanya, iklan kita akan ditampilkan di bagian atas, atau samping/sidebar, ada yang berupa iklan teks, ada juga dalam bentuk iklan banner/gambar.
Iklan jenis ini, sifatnya me-rotasi iklan kita. Coba lihat salah satu situs anggota jaringannya. Perhatikan, ternyata iklan yang tampil setiap kita buka, beda-beda. Ya, maksudnya iklan yang muncul dibuat bergiliran.
Apakah efektif? Menurut saya tergantung kalimat/teks iklan yang kita pakai sangat menentukan. Tapi enaknya, disini kita bisa meng-edit kalimat iklan tsb setiap saat, sampai ketemu yang paling menghasilkan pengunjung yang banyak. Pikirkanlah teks iklan yang tertarget ke pasar yang dibidik.
4. IKLAN BAYAR PER PENGUNJUNG (BAYAR PER KLIK)
Iklan jenis ini sangat fair. Kita hanya membayar sejumlah klik atau sejumlah pengunjung yang datang ke web kita. Untuk pasang iklan disini, kita harus deposit dulu, misalnya Rp. 25.000
lalu setiap ada pengunjung ke web kita maka deposit kita akan berkurang dengan sendirinya.
Iklan jenis ini, dikenal juga dengan nama iklan PPC (pay per click)
Ada banyak tempat pemasangan iklan ini. Dalam panduan ini saya akan berikan panduan hanya untuk 2 tempat saja ya. Yang pertama di kliksaya.com dan kedua di http://ppcindo.com
Kliksaya.com saat ini termasuk tempat pemasangan iklan paling laris, sebab mereka sangat selektif memilih publisher (web/blog anggota jaringannya). Disini biaya iklannya minimal Rp. 250 per klik. Anggota jaringan web/blog nya termasuk sangat banyak.

Disini kita bisa memilih harga iklan per klik nya berapa. Kita bisa memilih harga iklan yang Rp. 500 per klik, tapi juga bisa memilih yang Rp. 100 per klik. Biasanya ini terkait dengan jumlah pengunjung (alexa rank) dari situs yang mau kita pasangi iklan kita.

Disini, kita bisa mulai dengan deposit Rp. 25.000 dulu, dengan biaya klik sekitar 250 rupiah per klik. Maka jika kita order Rp. 25.000 kita berarti “membeli pengunjung” sebanyak 100 orang.
Caranya:
1. Pendaftaran di http://kliksaya.com/web/register.php
sampai kita punya username dan password
2. Setelah pendaftaran selesai, login aja di
http://kliksaya.com/web/login.php?ret=/ad/index.php
lalu masukkan username dan password yang tadi kita daftarkan
3. setelah berhasil login, klik menu Pemesanan Pulsa di bagian atas. Istilah pulsa disini bukan pulsa beneran ya. Tapi istilah saja untuk menghitung sisa klik kita nantinya. 8. Sesekali cek iklan tsb, gimana kinerjanya. Apakah ada prospek yang terjaring? Kalau nggak, edit lagi teks iklannya. Kalau suatu waktu pengen menghentikan iklan, tinggal klik menu
Pengaturan Iklan, lalu klik kotak kecil di sebelah kiri, lalu klik Tombol Pause Iklan.

8. Sekarang atur penempatan:

9. Sekarang langkah terakhir adalah menambahkan jumlah KLIK

Anda alokasikan untuk iklan ini. Misalnya 100 klik.
